Bodywork
Visceral Manipulation
Visceral manipulation is an adaptation of Osteopathic practice to help with the alignment of the whole body.
Restrictions in movement are often fixations deep in our viscera that can only be freed by carefully trained hands. I use gentle direct and indirect techniques to release, balance and integrate this core fascia to further open and align the entire structure.
The visceral fascia has strong affects on the whole structure – a couple of examples are if one kidney is higher than the other it can cause a pelvic imbalance, or a right shoulder pain can be caused by imbalance in the liver and gallbladder.
The visceral organs are all in close proximity to one another so if one organ is out of harmony then they can all be affected.
The work can be done in conjunction with Structural Integration or as separate sessions specific to the client’s needs.
Structural Integration
How Does Structural Integration Work?
Alignment is key to S.I. The body’s basic capacities of support, lift, continuity and balance all rely upon alignment to express optimum function.
People often come to me with a chronic pain or discomfort in their hips, knees, shoulder(s), neck, feet, or most commonly, their back.
The pain appears in a specific area but the strain pattern probably starts elsewhere in the structure. Over time, the body adapts to injuries or emotional stressors by distributing the stress, causing secondary pains elsewhere in the body.
The structure of the body is literally held together by connective tissue known as fascia. The fascia wraps around our muscles, nerves, visceral organs and bones of the skeleton.
The effect of injury and repetitive misuse to the structure is to produce patterns of shortening, twisting and collapse in the connective tissues. This misalignment can lead to chronic pain, limited range of motion, discomfort and sometimes, mood disorders.
Structural Integration releases these patterns by lengthening and opening the connective tissue. As a result, the tissue becomes soft, re-hydrated and more pliable allowing movement and flexibility. The body’s compensations are changed because it organizes the imbalances in the tissue.
For new clients Structural Integration is undertaken in a 10 session series. The purpose is to de-strain, align and balance the entire body. Each session generates a wave of change to the fascia network affecting all systems of the body simultaneously. In sequence, each session predicts the need for the next, inviting random disorder to surface, unwinding years of habitual compensation that have become painfully normal and all too familiar.
Individual sessions to work on specific areas can help but the most benefit comes through the 10 series because it is so thorough.
The systematic approach to releasing gravity through the fascia layers aligns the body and improves posture. The body lengthens allowing muscles the space to work and joints the freedom to function.
